Criteria considered when purchasing a white or colorless diamond, such as cut proportions and clarity, are less important when purchasing a fancy color diamond.

Only a few thousand carats of fancy colored rough diamonds of gem quality are mined each year, compared to ten millions of carats of white diamonds. That is primary reason fancy colored diamonds are regarded as more special than colorless diamonds.
